jerseyridgearts's blog: Back to the Gardens Spring 2014

Posted on Apr 8, 2014 7:09 PM

It's been several years (due to poor health) that I've been in my gardens but this year I'm determined to rejuvenate my gardens as I rejuvenate myself.

Weather in northwestern Illinois has been brutal: bone dry hot summers followed by storms and wind and then sub zero winters. The snow this year was record-breaking but I think that may bode well for my forgotten plants.

The English style Perennial Garden was mowed in 2012 and 2013 (painful, yes) but I poked around some this week and found oriental poppies, purple globe alliums, daffs and tulips, geraniums pushing through the thawed earth. The Entrance Garden needs some ruthless editing (all but the once blooming roses must go) and a truckfull of mulch. The Shrub Border, Shade Garden and Bird Gardens need pruning and culling. And DH convinced me to burn the Kitchen Garden after two years of rampant, unchecked weeds. Oh, and the Orchard...lots of storm damage there to clear.

But the thrill of new growth, beautiful blooms and new designs has caught my heart again...can't wait to start again tomorrow.
