It has been a dry winter with one week of very low temps during the night that really damaged most of my succulents I had in pots. Some will recover, many I tossed. I have enough to care for that I won't miss them. Well, maybe I will when I come across my older shots of huge aeoniums!
We didn't have as much rain as we usually get in the winter here but it was enough to really green things up and get the weeds growing too unfortunately. The warmer weather the past few weeks have contributed to things starting early, I have daylily scapes and rose buds and blooms already. I am getting pops of color with a few trees, shrubs and a few small dwarf bearded iris blooming about 2-3 weeks earlier than usual. Enlarge to see names.
Golden Celebration is putting out some yummy looking blooms! Bigger and fatter than I remember them ever looking.
My sister-in-law & brother-in-law were visiting for almost 2 weeks with their 4 kids. Every morning he would get up at zero dark thirty and make coffee and oatmeal and then head out into the garden. He cleared all the crushed granite pathways of weeds, the beds of weeds, and also pruned overgrown shrubs. He then dug up these large rocks from an old retaining border and created this curved wall, incorporating some old clay pipes at both ends (thanks @Lizzipa, we finally used the ones we got from you!) and a rusty fire pot we found on an old abandoned homestead. Once we fill it in with soil, we'll add a row of eating grapes. The clay pipes will be planted with sedum to spill over the sides like my other pipes, (pictured below in last photo taken in 2012).
Family left yesterday, I will miss that workhorse BIL of mine!! Stay tuned for progress on this section.
Excited about this upcoming year and the garden progress!
