LysmachiaMoon's blog: I am covered in gore

We've been having tons of trouble with phone/internet the past week, all tracing back to the big power surge from a downed line that went through our neighborhood. Anyways....Sunday I really tore into the veg garden and cleaned out the asparagus patch (finally FINALLY....no more bindweed and couch grass!!!! *does dance of joy*); my rigorous Roundup and weeding thru early spring paid off. I also cleaned out the new black raspberry patch...very nice...the canes are really huge. I need to tie them up. Also got all the old pea patch rolled up and out of there. So now that end of the garden is looking pretty good.

So...as I'm hauling weeds to the compost heap in the woods, I see that my poor flowering plum that got split in the ice storm during the winter is really getting "unbalanced"...there's tons of growth on one side, not so much on the other and it's starting to pull the already leaning tree further to one side. I decided that I'd get in there and prune out what I could to try to even things out. Im happily snipping, lopping and sawing away ...then I saw through a fairly thick branch over head, it sort of snags on something and when it comes down *BOP* right in the noggin. I saw stars. It wasn't such a big heavy branch, but flowering plums have these wicked huge thorns every so often and don't you know... one of them quite literally "nailed" me. I had to reach up and pull out this 1 inch long thorn from my scalp! It hurt, but not that bad and i saw that I got the whole thing out. So I rubbed the spot, cursed a bit, then got back to work. No big deal.

About an hour later, hot, tired, thirsty, and wringing in sweat, I went into the bathroom to clean up and change for breakfast. HOLY GOD. I looked in the mirror and there's this person who looks like the survivor of a botched Sioux scalping attack. *LOL* They say scalp wounds bleed profusely. They are right. What with all the sweating, I did not even notice it but I must have had blood pouring down my hair, into my ear, down my neck, smeared across my cheek where I must have wiped it away....thank god the neighbors didnt' see me. Of course it looked FAR worse than it actually was, just a tiny poke on the noggin.

My transplanted (experiment) strawberries are actully doing pretty good! I'm surprised. I thought maybe they'd just wither up and die. Since they are doing so well, I'm going to try moving more this week. I also need to get my late cabbage and a six-pack of brussel sprouts into the ground today.

I'm totally swamped with work, everything is backed up because I was offline without electricity for a while, and also it took most of Monday to get things working again....that is an experience I want to forget!

Cooler and overcast today; we're supposed to have some much cooler (low 80s) temps this week. That will be nice because it's been pretty oppressive.
