LysmachiaMoon's blog: A freudian moment

Hmm. You know, I never did like my mother-in-law very much. I mean we never had any outright "words" or anything, I always treated her well and she was always nice to me, but there was never any common ground, nothing. Her favorite flowers were yellow roses; we always sent them on her birthday, etc. She passed away 3 years ago. I forgot all about the yellow roses.

The other week, I bought those 3 cheap-o roses at Ollie's Discount Outlet and one was a yellow climber. Well, I hurried up and planted the other 2 (doing great...wonder what they will turn out to TRULY be?) but the yellow climber sat in a bucket of water for all that time. Then the other day, a friend came over to get some forsythia and I dumped out the rose and gave her the bucket to carry the forsy. home in. Meant to plant the rose. Forgot. Finally planted it yesterday. Looks pretty bad....I wonder if I killed it. I also wonder if some dark part of me did it on purpose? A subconscious desire to punish my m.-i.-l.

Otherwise, the garden is looking pretty good...my daffs are in full flower now, and they are EVERYWHERE. Just lovely clumps and drifts of yellow and white... so nice. The forsythia, of which I have legion, are also in full bloom and looking wonderful. The whole place is just incandescent when the sun comes out.

I got all my onions planted and yesterday I got my regular peas in. Still need to plant the snow peas. I think it's getting a bit late, but I'll try. Also decided to re-start chinese cabbage and pak choi. The seedling I set out are struggling and some have already died. These things grow very quickly, so I may be able to get them going fast and get them out before the end of May.

I'm seriously considering re-starting cabbages as well. They'll go in late, but that might give me a longer harvest and that would be ok. Also need to start the Brussel Sprouts for fall.

Still weeding where I can and making only minimal progress with anything. I did get compost spread over the newly enlarged rose border and I also shifted the depot pile of compost in the woods onto the berm I've been making all winter to work as the base for the stumpery. All winter I heaped up leaves, rotted wood, and used kitty litter in that area and now I want to cover the mess with about 4-6 inches of good compost so it will provide a good base to plant into and to nestle logs and stumps into.

I spent all day Sunday and Monday in the office doing some really intense editing and so I gave myself Tuesday "off" to take care of some household/garden things. Got the taxes out, stopped at my mechanics to report the little tappita tappita noise coming from the truck, stopped at the feed store to get salt for the water softener and bought some seed potatoes...never again. I can get nicer small potatoes at the grocery store and that's where I'll buy my red early potatoes this year. Got home, with every intention of spending the day working on the hen run...needs new mesh on the door, needs new mesh/chickenwire put up overhead to keep the darned hens from escaping *Shhh..she's not looking. Quick! Boost me up! Ah! Freeedommmm!"* Scrubbed out garbage cans, cleaned out the basement, etc. By the time I sat down to take a breath it was 2 p.m and that was about it. Got a lot done, but not what I wanted to get done.
