LysmachiaMoon's blog: First "cliff rock" poured

Posted on Jul 4, 2015 11:09 AM

Well, after some thought I figured it's always better around here if I can do two things at once, so I dug a shallow trench up in the new Scent Circle garden area so I could both dig out some of the scilla and daff bulbs there and also make a sort of mold for the "cliff rock" for the top of the Jungle Garden. I think it went well, but only time will tell. I do worry that it will crack when I try to lift it out of the ground....I am not sure I made it thick enough. I'm looking at this as a learning experience, an experiment.... I dug about 5 inches down, but only poured maybe 21/2 to 3 inches of concrete. A roughly rectangular shape. I lined the hole with a piece of old plastic tarp, with some holes in it. Also, to get "artsy" I tossed in a handful of green glass pebbles into the bottom of the mold, so (hopefully), they will shine through the concrete. Also, when I mixed the concrete, I added a couple handfuls of peatmoss and some of that concrete colorant agent (black). I'm hoping the result will be dark gray. I'm also hoping the peat moss might both lighten the weight of the resulting slab and make it a bit more conducive to moss.

I also got all the construction debris cleaned up from in front of the Folly Wall and fitted a handful of small stones into the gaps. Will still need to mortar them into place, but it was getting too hot and I was getting too tired to do it then.

A visit to Lowe's: 3 pots of Pow Wow Pink coneflowers. These did very well for me the past 2 years; unlike the white or other colors, they have consistently come back year after year, so I figured at 3 for $12, it was worth a try. Also got 3 pots of lavender/white phlox for $12. Got a pot of that curly Juncus type grass/reed for only $1. And got a really good deal on a hanging basket...for $3 I got a basket with a deep red ivy leaved geranium. It just needs deadheading and a little feed and it should be fine. Also...I love overwintering geraniums and they are one of the few things I actually have successfully started from cuttings.

Heavy rain off and on all day today. Glad I dont' have plans for the Independence Day holiday. I think the town's fireworks display may be cancelled; they should have had it yesterday,.
