LysmachiaMoon's blog: End of summer

According to the "old calender" August 1 is the first day of Autumn, and that about fits with my gardening calender. The first week of August marks the beginning of the really big harvest...potatoes, onions, beans, tomatoes, squash, cukes, etc. Also, there's a slight change in the quality of the light now...the intense glare of mid June/July is fading into that softer light that means fall is on the way. The heat is certainly not relenting though...we're in the middle of the hottest week of our summer...mid- and upper 90s and very high humidity. No rain for the past several days, but it looks like it's clouding up and getting that unsettled look that precedes a thunderstorm. We could use it! Everything is so spoiled from a very wet summer that these few days of dry weather are bringing on a major case of wilt.

Everything is starting to look a bit tarnished, a bit draggled, a bit tired....I think I'll be good and ready for the end of the season this year. Im already looking back at the past season, making mental notes of what went well, what needs work, what failed. Overall, so far, I think it was a good season: many of the things that I planted last year really took off this summer, I made some measurable progress on some projects, and I learned a lot.
