I am currently working on my indoor seed starting and my medium of choice is coir (coconut fiber). Coir is like peat and some other potting mediums, though, and has little nutritional value. I have a lot of wood ashes and I am wondering if it will work as a potting soil amendment and how much might be beneficial. Has anyone experience with using wood ashes in this way? How about for hanging baskets and other seasonal containers?
In the past I have used Rich Earth, worm castings and whatever else I happen to find in the spring. I now have my own worm farm but the worm dirt is not quite ready - perhaps I did not take care of my worms quite well enough (not enough walks or attention?).
