I've always had a chuckle when I've seen articles in garden magazines that talk about planting for winter interest. Here in zone 3, everything usually has frozen before the middle of October and is covered with snow shortly afterward. But then I started looking around.

Even though I'm not appreciating them so much by the end of winter, snow-covered gardens have their own beauty.

The snow makes everything clean and the structures become ornamental in themselves, not just as something to show off vines and plants.

The humid days and the frost on the trees, plants, and structures create a winter wonderland.

In the winter, when the leaves have fallen, the sun comes up and shines through the darkness of the trees on the horizon and lights the sky with fire.

Although we don't have the same kind of winter interest that can be found in the warmer areas, and even though the beauty of the flowers is covered with snow for a rest and the containers have long since been stored away, I have learned that there IS always something interesting to see in the garden.
