An August Not-A-Raffle-Raffle

This month it's my turn and I have collected a pile of goodies from my store for three lucky winners this month.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jan and I live in Pinellas Park, FL. I love to design handmade jewelry as a hobby and I work mainly with glass and polymer clay. I love polymer clay because it allows you to create your own colors and patterns depending on how you manipulate the clay. After forming, baking and applying a sealer to clay beads, they take on the look of stone and porcelain and marble.

The other media I use is glass. I typically use art glass, which is the glass used in making stained glass pieces; it is a great way to use up scrap glass. I also use a type of glass called dichroic glass. Wikipedia describes dichroic glass as “glass containing multiple micro-layers of metals or oxides which give the glass dichroic optical properties. The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a particular transmitted color and a completely different reflected color, as certain wave lengths of light either pass through or are reflected. This causes an array of color to be displayed. The colors shift depending on the angle of view. Dichroic glass is an example of thin-film optics.

What I do is take a base glass of black or clear and place a layer of dichroic on top of that. Then I put one or more layers of clear glass on top. Topping it with clear glass gives more depth to the colors that are given off after firing the piece. There are several ways to fuse glass. You can cut pieces and put them in the kiln and let them fire into random shapes. After firing, you can either leave the piece natural (freeform) or use a grinder to shape the piece into uniform circles, squares and rectangles. If grinding the piece, it has to be refired to smooth the edges. The other method is to use small pieces of glass in specially made molds. I prefer the freeform method; they are unique, one of a kind, and don’t look mass produced.

In the grand prize I am offering, item #1 is a dichroic freeform fused pendant which is on a black multi-ribboned necklace 16 inches long with a 2 inch extender. Item #2 is a pair of blue dichroic glass earrings that match the pendant in #1. Item #3 is a bracelet made of black glass beads with spacers beaded onto memory wire. Item #4 is a bracelet made of turquoise colored glass beads. The larger beads are lampwork style with white designs on the blue glass. Item #5 is a pair of earrings that feature yellow dyed mother of pearl round beads. I was able to insert gold spacer and clear bicone beads in the center of the round beads as I placed them on the wire. Item #6 is a pair of simple earrings made of green pearlized glass beads with gold spacer beads.

Additionally, the grand prize winner will receive a starter plant of Variegated Alocasia macrorrhizos.
