When sowing seeds, shallow is better than deep.

Be sure to follow seed package instructions for sowing depth. The seed has limited energy to produce growth that will reach the soil surface and light. With some exceptions, a good rule of thumb is this: seed should be sown to a depth of 3 times its own size.
