Cucumbers can grow just fine sprawled on the ground, but they take to climbing excellently. It saves space and makes the fruits easy to find. You don't need to bend over and hunt on the ground. An added bonus is that the cucumbers themselves grow straighter and don't end up curled, as often happens when they are grown on the ground.
Remember the fruits are heavy, so you need a sturdy support system.
