Attract Songbirds with Fruiting Shrubs

Many of us put seed out to attract backyard birds, but we can bring even more birds to the garden by adding summer fruiting shrubs.

Not all songbirds feed on birdseed blends. And even if they do, many still look for small fruits to add to their diet. By adding the kinds of shrub fruits that birds love to eat, you can provide your feathered friends with both food and cover.

I recommend the following summer-fruiting shrubs, all of which grow in my garden.

Blueberries

Blueberries are a favorite garden fruit of mine, but did you know that birds love them just as much as we do?

Common Elderberry

Elderberry is useful for making jam and attracting songbirds to the garden.

Serviceberry

Serviceberries taste like blander blueberries to me. I don't know what they taste like to the birds, but I do know that the songbirds stick around until the berries are completely gone.

Goumi

Perhaps not very well known, these tart berries can be picked to make jam, but around here they are left for the birds to enjoy. A never-ending series of songbirds will visit when the Goumi are getting ripe.

Grey Dogwood

A really lovely large shrub whose summer berries bring in the summer birds.

Silky Dogwood

Another dogwood with berries popular with the backyard songbirds.
