An easily accomplished way of adding interest and color to your winter garden is by planting winter fruiting shrubs.

The red berries of winter fruiting shrubs stand out starkly in a snowy landscape. Even without the snow, the berries liven up the otherwise colorless landscape.

Many of us grow fruiting shrubs for berry harvesting in the summer, but have you given any thought to winter fruits? The fruits of shrubs such as Winterberry and many viburnums mature in the late fall. These berries hang on all winter or until the backyard songbirds pick the branches clean. The vibrant colors of the berries against the bare branches and stark white snow make a lovely winter display.

Berries of Red Sprite Winterberries stand out against the newly fallen snow.

Berries still look lovely on a drab snowless day.
