If you are growing roses, you want to grow beautiful roses! While growing conditions differ across the country, and all of these suggestions may not work in some areas, I think many of these tips may be helpful in growing the beautiful blooms that we all covet.

1. Plan ahead. Select a a nice sunny location where you can enjoy your roses. My rose beds are in the front yard where I can see them as I come and go. My neighbors love them also.

2. Prepare the soil. Soils vary, but most will be improved with the addition of organic matter. Use what is available to you.

3. Select your roses. What is available locally? Most of mine were purchased in containers at good local nurseries. Many people prefer bare root roses. Avoid bagged ones that are already leafing out before the desired planting time.

4. When planting a rose, dig a good-sized hole. Water the new plant in well and keep moist as roots develop. Mound the plant with soil or compost if it is bare root. Roses love water.

5. Keep your planting attractive and encourage more bloom by keeping aging blossoms removed. This is called dead-heading.

6. Feed your roses. I like to put down some granular fertilizer in early spring. Use something in a ratio of l:2:1. Compost helps.

7. Allow roses to go dormant in the fall and do minimal pruning then. Do major pruning in the spring as new growth begins to break.
