A small washtub has been given a second life. Once upon a time, my son used it at school to hold his supplies, and now it's my gardening friend.

During the winter I bring in a lot of plants and keep them going until warmer weather, when they can go back outside. When it's time to water them, this old plastic washtub can be very helpful. I place the potted plant in the tub and then water it thoroughly. I let the pot sit there a few minutes, soaking up some of the water that has drained out. If I place something under the tub on one end (such as a thick book), the slanted surface allows excess water to drain to the lower end of the tub. When I put my plants back in their saucers, I know they have been well-watered, but they won't be sitting in a puddle of water in their saucer or leaking onto the floor or shelf. My husband appreciates me keeping my plant stuff out of the kitchen sink (which I used to use before I realized this tub would be so handy). My tub is 12" wide, 14" long, and about 5" deep. Most of my larger pots fit into it, and I can water several smaller plants at the same time.

I also use this tub outside when I'm re-potting plants. It catches the potting soil so that I don't lose any. It's also good for mixing soils. When I'm not using it, it slides into place on a shelf and can be used for storage.
