Not only can it evoke strong feelings with its powerful fragrance, but the much-maligned Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) can also evoke feelings of anger if it escapes into your landscape or beyond. Fortunately, there are other species of this vine that can provide the positive characteristics of honeysuckle without as many of the negative ones.

One of my personal favorites is the Trumpet Honeysuckle 'Alabama Crimson' (Lonicera sempervirens), also called Crimson Honeysuckle. It grows best in full sun or light shade and in average soil. This low-maintenance vine is very attractive to hummingbirds and works well to cover a chain link fence, trellis, or arbor. When in bloom, it is extremely showy. It's a choice honeysuckle that is not overly aggressive.

Lonicera x heckrottii is another good choice for a beautiful honeysuckle that is well-behaved and easy to maintain.
