The variety Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' seldom flowers and is not an aggressive spreader. When it does bloom, the few flowers that are produced usually occur in early summer and can be easily deadheaded, if desired. It has a moderate growth rate and requires well-drained soil in order to prevent rotting.
With a height of about 6 inches, this Stachys is excellent for lining pathways and borders. Plants form a dense clump of soft, felt-like, silver-grey leaves and are easily divided. Because the leaves are close to the ground, mulching under the plants helps to keep them dry. Other possible problems include powdery mildew and slug damage.
Lamb's Ears require little maintenance. They have a tendency to grow from the center out, leaving dead spots in the middle. The plants therefore will benefit from division every 2-4 years. The lower foliage may become brown by late in the season.
