I needed a tall accent to finish off a mixed container, but my budget didn't stretch to yet another nursery trip. As I looked around, I found the solution.

I realized I had a whole collection of daylilies I was propagating in gallon pots. They might not bloom this year, but they sure had pretty, upright leaves! I picked out one that seemed to be the right height and shape for the center of the container I was planting with petunias and verbena. A couple of fans dug from the edge of a garden clump would have worked, too. I love the effect, and as a bonus, that little daylily will get extra attention and more regular watering this summer. In fall, I'll have a nice big daylily to plant out in the garden.
