Jane Gates, the author of a new gardening book, has a long history in art, music and gardening. She has studied horticulture and worked in the green industry for over 30 years, propagating, hybridizing, running nurseries, designing gardens, building landscapes and managing plant stores. Come and listen to my 30 minute conversation with this fascinating personality.

Thumb of 2012-08-02/dave/826818In 1998, Jane started Gates & Croft Horticultural Design where she developed a questionnaire to help her understand what clients want from their gardens even if they weren't sure themselves. Her love of nature put her on the cutting edge of environmental issues long before the term 'Eco-friendly' became popular. Jane has produced hundreds of landscape designs, each one a unique work of art specially adapted to the client's tastes and needs.

Jane's first gardening book, "All the Garden's a Stage: Choosing the Best Performing Plants for a Sustainable Garden" became available this past April. It is a whimsical book that covers how to make your garden successful from the choice of plants through landscape design and is written for an entertaining read.

I really enjoyed the book. The first half of the book is a general "how to design your gardens" tutorial, and the second half covers a detailed look at a wide range of different plants. The idea is that each plant is "auditioning for a role" in your production. It's cute, clever, colorful, professional and well put together.

When Trish suggested that I interview her and record it for our audience to hear, I jumped at the idea. So, without further ado, I present to you my interview with Jane Gates:

I enjoyed my chat with Jane and I want to thank her for taking the time to talk with us!
