Daylilies: Places To Buy and Sell

I always recommend that people avoid daylilies sold in big box stores and general nurseries. Their plants are often tissue cultured. Tissue cultured plants may or may not perform as well as natural, field grown divisions. I have grown several tissue cultured daylilies next to field grown to see if there was a difference. The field grown plants always bloomed better and had better foliage than tissue culture. That was years ago - maybe the TC methods are better now. Personally, I only grow field grown divisions. I enjoy supporting the small growers and the hybridizers instead of large corporations. I doubt any of the sources below have tissue cultured daylilies for sale.

The ATP Co-ops, Group Buys and Classifieds forum. ATP members often post daylilies on this forum.

Use the ATP Database to see if anyone has the plant available. For instance, I have the daylily 'Possible Side Effects' on my Plant List, and it is labeled "have." If you look up Possible Side Effects in the ATP Database, at the top you will see "1 member has this plant." You can click on that and be shown details on who has the plant, and if it is available or not.

ATP Recommendations. Companies recommended by ATP members are listed here. There are several daylily growers listed. Clicking on the listing brings up contact information as well as the recommendations from ATP members.

ATP Daylily Forum. The topic of buying and selling plants from various sources comes up often. Photos of plants received are posted regularly, with comments about the grower/seller. When hybridizers update their websites with new introductions, Daylily Forum members are right on top of it, posting links, and commenting on what is new, or who is having a sale.

AHS Sources List. Here, you can find sources for daylilies, listed by region.

AHS Daylily Club Sales. Most of the AHS Daylily Clubs have yearly sales. Clubs may purchase plants to sell, or members bring in their extra divisions. You can find really nice reasonably priced daylilies this way. Click here, then click on your region to go to the listing of all AHS Daylily Clubs.

Charlotte's Daylily Diary and Charlotte's Hybridizer's Corner. Charlotte works hard to maintain this listing of hybridizers and growers. She is constantly updating links and keeping the site up to date.

The Lily Auction. Mike Longo runs The Lily Auction. It is similar to ebay, for daylilies and daylily seeds. Mike really works hard to make it as secure a site as he can. The Auction has been around for many years now, and I have not heard of any security problems with people using the site. People say they are addicted to the Lily Auction! There are daylilies and seeds in all price ranges sold on the auction. After you register, you can make a want list, and you will be notified when a plant has been listed for sale. Hybridizers, Daylily sales gardens, and home gardeners sell plants on the auction. Feedback information is available on buyers and sellers. There are a few other items sold on the auction - garden tools, hosta, and tropicals.
