Coffee, Anyone?

About to pour out that leftover coffee? Wait! Hold on. It's not finished yet. It still has work to do. I have found that some plants love their coffee as much as I do.

Save that leftover coffee you have from your morning breakfast and let it cool. Or, if you are like me and have the ultimate in coffee pots (I love my Keurig), run that K Cup through one more time and set the cup aside to cool. I also use the little basket that comes with the Keurig, allowing you to use your own ground coffee, as much as I use the K Cups, if not more. So, if you use that, just open it up and stir the grounds around, then re-run for the plants. My ferns and my Thanksgiving and Christmas Cacti love their coffee. I give the ferns a drink every couple of weeks during the summer. I suppose if you keep yours through the winter, you could continue. I don't, as I have nowhere to overwinter them, and they are just too messy to try to keep in the house. Mine have shed heavily every time I have tried to bring them into the house. I give a drink to the cacti about every three weeks. They seem to love it.

Another plant that seems to love coffee is the blueberry bush. Blueberries love to have coffee grounds strewn around them. Occasionally I will take a hoe and chop them into the soil some. If you have more coffee than you need for your cacti and ferns, just pour it around the blueberries. They will almost wrap their branches around you and give you a hug.

Does anyone know of any other plants that are coffeeholics? Could it be the acid in the coffee? I don't know, but they do seem to respond very well to the coffee. Below are some shots of my yellow cactus and my white one. The white one buds out white and then turns a very pale delicate pink. It's so lovely.
