Use a hand lens or jeweler's loupe to obtain extreme close-ups.

Shhh, don't tell anyone, but my eyesight is so bad that sometimes I use macro photos just to take a good look at things. Since my camera's macro feature stopped working for some unexplained reason, I had no way to get the extreme close-ups I needed. Then I remembered a little trick I learned from my son-in-law: Use a hand lens or jeweler's loupe to enlarge the area you need to photograph, then focus the camera on that!
