Fritz is short for Fritillaria Imperialis. His Crown (it is imperial) graces his face as he towers majestically over all the gardens.
Fritz does not visit frequently, he doesn't even come every year. If I am paying attention and watching closely, I sometimes notice his arrival, but more often than not he just appears unannounced.
Often when he visits he is not alone, but is surrounded by a few beautiful ladies that are drawn to his magnetic personality.
When he first arrives, he always seems a bit shy. Although he appears to hang his head, it is never in shame. He is just checking out his roots! Even in foul weather he tries to stand tall, but I must let him use the crutch when he begins to falter. I remember one spring when he arrived we had terrible winds from a surrounding weather pattern. He stood as long as he could, just as firm in his stead as a soldier on the battlefield, without faltering even for a moment, until finally he needed me to steady him.
He has a big Pinocchio nose, but don't let that scare you. When you see him up close he is really quite striking.
Fritz doesn't stay long and I always miss him when he leaves, but with a bit of coaxing, I know I can get him to return again and again!
