Easy Trellis for Seasonal Vines

All you need are: a ball of jute or other natural garden twine, scissors, a few garden staples, and a hammer (or rock) for the staples.

1. Tie a loop in the end of the twine, hold that end, and toss the remaining ball over a tree limb (or overhanging pagoda, pipe, beam, whatever).

2. Cut the twine free from the twine ball end and thread that end through the loop you made earlier. Pull to cinch the twine around the branch. The free end should be long enough to reach the base of the vine you wish to trellis.

3. Put a garden staple near the base of your vine and tie the loose end of the twine to that, placing enough tension to keep it straight. Hammer the staple in tight.

4. Train the vine up the trellis. With passionflowers it is easy to twirl a few of its tendrils around your trellis.

My trellises last all summer. In the late fall and early winter they come down on their own. The branch end will rot off by the following spring. Enjoy your vines!
