It is a chore to keep plants in pots watered and looking nice during the hot summers as well as through the winter. I have found self-watering pots to be useful in helping me without a lot of work on my part. (I'm basically lazy.)

We have two large self-watering pots that sit year round on either side of our driveway. One pot contains grape hyacinths, ice plant, sedum, and perovskia.

In the spring, the hyacinths bloom, making a nice display. The sedum begins to peek out from underneath the hyacinths.

The other pot contains daffodils, grape hyacinths, and sedum. Sorry I didn't catch a photo of the pretty yellow double daffodils, which had gone to seed by the time I got around to taking the picture. I told you I am basically lazy. I also procrastinate.

After the hyacinths begin to die down, I clean out the spent hyacinths and daffodils. By this time the hyacinths have gone to seed and I usually harvest some of them. My philosophy is that one can never have too many seeds. The sedum and perovskia take over for the remainder of the spring and summer.

By the end of June, the Peroviskia begins to bloom, and so does the ice plant.

During July, after some fertilizer has been applied, the plants begin to fill in more.

It is now August and you can see the muscari popping up between the sedum and perovskia. The perovskia will continue blooming into the fall.

In the fall, the perovskia is cut back and the grape hyacinths begin to come up and cover the sedum, actually protecting it and the perovskia roots during the winter and acting as mulch.
