Containers can come from anywhere, not just your local garden center. Head out and get inspired with the selections in your local thrift stores and garage sales, and use your extra cash for more plants instead.

If you are anything like me, you have more plants than room for them, both inside and out! I am constantly needing new places to put my plants and this usually comes in the form of containers scattered in every available space.

I set out to balance the need for containers with my semi-limited budget and found myself standing in my local thrift store. Not only are thrift stores great places to find cheap containers, they are also wonderful places for the inspiration of new creative ideas.

Wandering through the aisles, I see everything as a potential new home for my plants. You can find anything -- from the basic plastic and terra cotta pots perfect for storing and propagating plants, to beautiful clear glass bowls and vases. I have found much inspiration in old light fixtures and glassware. Antique light fixtures easily can be flipped upside-down and filled with plants! Old china and teacups make beautiful delicate accents for smaller varieties of plants and easily turn into awe-inspiring gifts for friends and family. Ceramic sugar bowls are also perfect new plant homes.

Local garage/yard sales also provide a thrifty way to explore a new selection of containers at budget-worthy prices. Garden supplies are usually abundant when people are cleaning out their garage space. Its also a great way to get out on a Saturday morning and enjoy the upcoming spring weather we've all been looking forward to! You also get a chance to check out other landscaping ideas.

My passion happens to lie in tender succulents and sempervivum, but you could fill the containers you find with just about anything -- the sky's the limit!

As they say, one man's trash is a gardener's container! (or something like that...)
