Using galvanized livestock troughs for planting is a great idea, but the drilling is no easy job.

First, a disclaimer: my experience with a drill is almost zero. It is no easy task drilling, and thankfully my son helped me!

There are different drill bits for wood and metal and, of course, a masonry drill. Buy a good sharp drill bit before you start drilling.

This is what I bought:

Next, make sure all of the batteries you have are charged for your drill.

This is the drill and bit I used.

I found that if you turn the trough to the ground and drill into sod, it works much better than drilling from the bottom into the air. Wear safety glasses to guard your eyes from the metal shavings.

Then I painted the holes with galvanized spray paint to cover the drilled holes. This helps prevent rust on the bottom of the trough.

I'm placing the troughs on cement pavers to provide an air space which will ensure good drainage.

This is not an easy job, so take your time. Soil will be added later. Then the planting begins.
