Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) |
Have |
Present since before owning this property. Slow to drop previous seasons brown leaves, sometimes holding on with new spring leaves. Autumn colour depends on seasonal conditions.
Purple-Leaved Threadleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Atropurpureum') |
Have |
Multiple grafted onto tall branched rootstock. This attracts more comments from visitors than any other plant. Stunning in spring! Deep burgundy spring foliage with red flowers. Stays attractive through summer though colour deepens and greens more. Attractive again in Autumn, turning crimson. Only downside is tends to hold onto brown dead leaves throughout winter. I can't help myself but to snip them all off, though it takes ages.
Cutleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Filigree') |
Have |
Needs at least partial summer shade, foliage is delicate. Beautiful contrast between light young spring foliage and red flowers in spring. Variegation is subtle and only visible up close.
Cutleaf Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum 'Inaba Shidare') |
Have |
Quite late to leaf out in spring. Reliable spring and autumn colour.
Freeman's Maple (Acer x freemanii Autumn Blaze®) |
Have |
Excellent Autumn colour but not reliable as sometimes drops its leaves way too early.
Autumn Snowflake (Acis autumnalis) |
Have |
Late summer to early Autumn masses of delicate flowers. Great edging bulb, multiplies quickly. Fine attractive grass-like foliage. Small enough for rock gardens. Tough to heavy soil, shade, sun, drought.
Monkshood (Aconitum 'Spark's Variety') |
Prev |
Failed to establish - rotted. Having a second try with a new healthier looking specimen in an open sunny location with deep root mulching.
Climbing Monkshood (Aconitum hemsleyanum) |
Have |
New. Very poisonous, care is even needed in skin contact with leaves.
Kiwi Fruit (Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa) |
Have |
New. | ||
Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) |

Garlic (Allium sativum 'S & H Silverskin') |
Have |
New. | ||
Mediterranean Bells (Allium siculum) |
Have |
Tolerating heavy soil and drought and some shade. Flowers reliably. Slow to increase. Subtle, would suit a wild/natural garden.
Drumsticks (Allium sphaerocephalon) |
Have |
A better survivor in heavy soil than other some other Alliums. Has multiplied but greatly reduced flowering as shade has increased.
Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora) |
Have |
The fragrance of the leaves is so delicious it has to be near a path or doorway. Best protected from severe frost, deciduous in zone 8a, late to leaf out. Needs pruning to prevent becoming leggy/spindly. Drought and heat and poor soil tolerant. Sprays of tiny whitish flowers on branch tips, would suit natural areas.
Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria Princess Lilies® Camilla) |
Have |
Very useful colour, will match with most things. Likes dappled light under more open evergreen shrubs. Tolerates drought and root competition. Slowly increases.
Parrot Lily (Alstroemeria Princess Lilies® Ivana) |
Have |
Beautiful watermelon pink Princess lily. Vivid colour, great to brighten up an area, good ground cover near a red Weigela. Shade tolerant, slowly increases.
Parrot Lily (Alstroemeria Princess Lilies® Julieta) |
Have |
Unusual cool toned purple Alstoemeria, missing the yellow blotch that makes most have a warmer tone. Useful ground cover tolerant to light shade and root competition, slowly increasing. Blends with cool pinks, mauves and purples. |
