Watering tip for newly planted trees and shrubs

Use a root feeder when watering newly planted trees and shrubs. It prevents runoff, gets the water to the root zone and saves water. These can be often picked up at a garage sale for a dollar or two.

A quick marker tip

A quick marker tip

Since garden markers sometime get moved or lost, I try to put a plastic label (a section of window blind, labelled with Sharpie Industrial Marker) in the hole when I'm planting. This is especially good for perennials I know I'll want to dig/divide/share in the future -- when I dig it up and find the tag, I'll know exactly what it is, regardless of what happened to its official garden marker.

A quick tip

Brush snow from evergreens as soon as possible after a storm by using a broom in an upward, sweeping motion; as heavy snow or ice accumulation on the branches can cause serious damage.

A hand-y tip

If you garden barehanded as I often do, keep a bar of soap and nail brush next to the sink (or outside near a garden hose) for quick clean up.

A watering tip

Consider drip feed or soaker hose watering to efficiently keep your soil moist without encouraging foliage diseases. Mulch can increase the effectiveness of these watering methods, feed the plants, protect the roots, and trap soil-borne diseases and pests away from the foliage.

A quick shade tip

If your new transplants are getting too much sun, you can put an umbrella over them. Anchor the umbrella handle with something heavy like a concrete block, or drive a stake in the ground and tie the handle to it. You can also pound a length of pvc or galvanized pipe into the ground and drop the handle in.
