A quick potting tip

A quick potting tip

When potting plants, put some fallen leaves in the bottom half of the pot and then add potting soil. The leaves will keep the water draining and hold the soil in. Over time the leaves will compost, which really makes the plants happy. It works especially well with big pots, cutting down on your potting soil expense!

Glossary tip - Raceme

Make your own plant markers

I was trying to think of what I could use for plant markers rather than purchase them. It gets expensive if you’ve got a lot of plants! When I run out of ideas I go ask my husband, who always comes up with something that makes me slap my forehead and say “Why didn’t I think of that”! (342 words - Read the full article)

Label your way to success

Label your way to success

Any labelling tape I've tried has faded in a year or two. The very best way I've found to put a typed label on a plant marker is to use Avery Clear Laser Labels. Clean the marker plate with a swipe of alcohol so the label sticks perfectly, and they'll last in your garden for years. 5660 Address labels are just the right size for my favorite E20 zinc markers from EON industries.

A frugal garden mat

Use an old car floor mat for a cushion when sitting or kneeling in the garden. The rubber backing will also keep you dry when it's wet.

A quick water tip

Keep a few bottles of water in the kitchen freezer and grab a couple on your way out to the garden on a hot summer day. Keep one at hand and place the other in the mailbox for later. It will thaw slowly but stay cool enough for quenching your thirst while working in the heat.

The summer of stolen tomatoes

The summer of stolen tomatoes

They were only little tomato plants, each no more than two or three inches tall. I carefully dug two of them from the family garden and transplanted them to my own private garden hidden behind the playhouse. After all, who would ever miss two little tomato plants? Giant Swallowtail Butterflies and your citrus trees

It started out as a usual morning as I hand watered the front garden; then I noticed what looked like bird droppings all over one of the lime trees. (319 words - Read the full article)

A squirrel tip

To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant; squirrels won't come near it.
