Create Fun Winter Photos with Container Plants Brought in for the Winter

Bringing in all those prized plants we have sure is a chore in winter. Here in Florida, they're in one week and out the next; all to be done over again the following week, it seems, this time of year. Dragging things in for the freezes creates Miniature Garden photo opportunities. Plants can look great with the addition of a couple of items from the glass case inside. Using those things and touching them once in a while brings them back to life! (345 words - Read the full article)

The Container Rose Garden

Container gardening has become quite popular and is not limited to annuals alone. I started container gardening with a couple of hybrid tea roses about 10 years ago. Since then, my collection of container roses has expanded from a couple to about 20 pots. Hybrid tea roses, floribunda roses, small shrub roses, and miniatures are all fantastic in containers. Roses Rock with Epsom Salts

Roses Rock with Epsom Salts

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, MgSO4, and should not be confused with common salt, sodium chloride NaCl. Magnesium and sulfur are both natural minerals that many plants need to thrive. I have used Epsom salts in my garden for years and am very pleased with the obvious results of increased plant vigor, more blooms, larger blooms, greener foliage, and overall better plant health. This is especially true of my roses. (914 words - Read the full article)

Roses and Lilies Belong Together

I love the look of lilies planted between roses. The blooms complement each other when occurring at the same time or just give you extra color if blooming separately. (159 words - Read the full article)

David Austin's Roses

Although the rose societies group his roses with the shrubs, David Austin actually created an entirely new class of roses, which he named English Roses. He crossed old garden roses with modern cultivars to combine what he regarded as the best qualities of both. He wanted to combine the graceful form, charm, and fragrance of the old roses with the disease resistance, repeat bloom, and colors of the modern hybrid teas. (334 words - Read the full article)

Crowd your Roses for a Jumble of Color

Conventional wisdom advises plenty of space between rose bushes for best results. Instead I break the rules, plant very closely together, and benefit from a riot of color. (278 words - Read the full article)

Winter Planting Roses

Winter Planting Roses

No matter which type of rose is your favorite, they're all woody plants. They prefer cool and consistently moist conditions, along with plenty of gentle sunlight to grow strong roots and stems at a moderate rate. If your springtime planting conditions cannot easily support this necessary growth, you might try planting fully dormant roses in winter. (700 words - Read the full article)

Some new recommendations from our members:
LynneHTx recommended Joshua's Native Plants and wrote:

I love Joshua's. Great selection of natives and he also carries large fountain-sized pots and Mexican decor. His prices are great, too. If you make a trip to the Heights area in Houston, there are several great nurseries: Joshua's, Buchanan's, Another Place in Time, and also Zone 9 Tropicals. One is on 18th street, two are on 11th, and Zone 9 is another couple of blocks away. Makes for a nice afternoon. Enjoy.

malinda97 recommended Rough Brothers Inc and wrote:

I used Rough Brothers greenhouse equipment parts for one of my garden needs. Their staff is really helpful. They are not worried about just the sale, but care about me, the customer. Just a really awesome place. I would recommend this place.

SavageTM recommended Territorial Seed Company and wrote:

I have used seeds from Territorial for the last two years in my garden in Nisqually, and always have had great germination results and overall great veggies. Steve Solomon of Territorial Seed company wrote the book, literally, on growing vegetables west of the Cascades (look it up on Amazon). Lots of seed tested in the northwest. My go-to seed company.

jmorth recommended Summer Hill Seeds and wrote:

Have utilized this seed source often. Good customer relations, swift service, excellent variety, freebie packet, competitive pricing, good germination.

jmorth recommended Bluestone Perennials and wrote:

Known for their perennials, they also have a selection of bulbs offered periodically. I most recently received tulips and daffodils from them. It was a discounted end-of-season sale last November. Their response and quality are as good as their reputation for plants. Good customer service.
