The Importance of Pruning Clematises

If you’ve ever seen a clematis that is one big mountain of tangled up stems, it’s almost enough to scare you away from growing them. But let’s take a look at why, when, and how these remarkable vines should be pruned and you’ll find it’s not as difficult as it seems. (1,441 words - Read the full article)

Clematis/Rose Combinations

Clematises and roses are ideal companions. They grow well in the same types of locations, thrive in the same types of soil, require the same amount of watering, and respond equally well to the same fertilizers. (561 words - Read the full article)

Clematis - Dynamic Companion (Part 1)

We admire clematises because of the beauty of their flowers, but their dynamic nature, their rush to the top, and the sense of movement that they bring to the landscape offer much more to gardeners and admirers. (719 words - Read the full article)

Clematis in Containers

Despite my Canadian avatar, I live in Texas, so I can’t speak from practical experience about growing clematises in containers in the North. It is possible, however, to grow a clematis in a pot in a hot zone, and likely not that different in my native land. (493 words - Read the full article)

Some new reviews from the ATP Green Pages:

jmorth recommended High Country Gardens and wrote:

Good company. Nice selection. Packaging and shipping handled professionally. Excellent customer service (email and phone). Somewhat focused on western and/or xeric plants, but everywhere else not forgotten. They've participated in the ATP's not a raffle raffles (which is always a plus in my book).

jmorth recommended Annie's Annuals & Perennials and wrote:

Good company. Selections change periodically. Some unique plants. Focus on California climate, zones, and locations, though the rest of us are not forgotten. Packaging well done, shipping costs significant. I won a couple of not-a-raffle raffles last year and got 2 fifty-dollar cards good for as long as there's a balance. Thusly, I was able to order and receive plants this spring.

regisand recommended Victory Seed Company and wrote:

Great source of seeds adapted to the Pacific Northwest climate. I am very happy with the results of all seeds I planted from Victory. Staff is great and quick to respond to any inquiries. I met them in person at the Mother Earth News Fair in Albany and they were very welcoming and appreciative. My number-1 source of seeds.

dave recommended The Lily Farm and wrote:

This is the famous farm formerly run by Jack Carpenter and now run by Mark Carpenter. I visited this farm today and was delighted by the sheer variety of top-notch cultivars present. The farm was clean and beautifully presented, and Mark was welcoming, friendly and hospitable. The prices were reasonable and selection simply can't be beat. It's in the middle of nowhere but well worth the drive. Plan to spend at least a couple hours walking through all the various hoop houses and fields. Today was a little bit late in the season to visit. Next year I'm going to return in late May when more plants will be blooming.

tiptonla recommended Oakes Daylilies and wrote:

I won the April 2015 ATP Raffle. For my prize I chose the Oakes Daylilies gift certificate. They have a wide selection of plants and it was difficult to decide what to purchase. Ultimately I went with the jumbo collection. The cost was $17.94 with my gift certificate. I received these plants quickly after my selection. The customer service was friendly and kept me up to date on my order shipment status. The fans were very large and healthy. I also received a very nice bonus plant with my order. All the plants were packed well and none were broken. They all had sufficient amount of space and adequate cushioning. The box that they came in was big. Nothing was crammed into a tight space to save on shipping. Oakes Daylilies does packaging and shipping right! I received 5 fans of Mary’s Gold, 5 fans of Spider Miracle (bonus plant), 4 fans of Jolly White Giant, 4 fans of Tuscawilla Tigress, 4 fans of Lilting Belle, 4 fans of Red Flag, and 4 fans of Ruffled Apricot. These plants are now in the ground and thriving. Mary’s gold has already started budding. I will continue to add pictures to the plant database as these plants bloom. I am posting below a link to Oakes Daylilies website. I am also posting below a picture of the plants I received and the box in which they were shipped. (I placed a purple sharpie on the corner on the box for a size scale.) I already threw away the packing material or I would have posted that in a picture as well. Overall this was a excellent experience in purchasing daylilies and I would like to thank Oakes Daylilies for supporting ATP by donating to the raffle! Logan https://www.oakesdaylilies.com/

Located some hard-to-find natives that I'd been wanting on their website. I had never heard of them before, but buoyed by the reviews here, decided to go for it, and what a pleasure! Plants arrived promptly, exceptionally well-packed, good-sized, and healthy. Very pleased. Will order from them again. Highly recommend.

We keep growing, because ATP is where all the excitement is these days! Check out these numbers from last week:
