By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 4:00 PM, concerning plant: Chinese Trumpet Creeper (Campsis grandiflora 'Morning Calm')

I bought Morning Calm trumpet vine as a small mail order seedling years ago. For years it really did not do much of anything. This year, however, it took off growing and bloomed for the very first time. The flowers are very beautiful.

I found really nicely sized Lady Bell pepper seedlings this spring at a local nursery so had to buy and plant them. I think these are a very nice green bell for cooking or eating fresh. Would plant them again next year if I see seedlings.

Cubanelle is a very nice frying variety of pepper. I use mine mainly green and usually end up stir frying them. They do turn a nice red if I have patience to leave them long enough.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 3:03 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Traveler')

I grew Arkansas Traveler one year a few years back when I was trying out a batch of heirloom varieties. Arkansas Traveler sure did not make any impression on me as I can not remember anything about it, good or bad. Must have been very mediocre as I remember the ones that stood out as good and the really bad varieties also.

Costoluto Genovese doesn't have attractive fruits but I grow it for the flavor. Costoluto Genovese tomatoes have an excellent flavor and decent size.

If you like to grow heirloom tomatoes and want an early variety then Bloody Butcher is an excellent choice. Bloody Butcher sets nicely flavored small early tomatoes.

I thought the flavor of this tomato was excellent. I would like the plant to have set more fruit than it did. However fruits are much too prone to splitting and cracking for me. Will not be growing it again.

Cherokee Purple heirloom tomatoes produce well for an heirloom with very decent fruit set. Tomatoes have a complex and unique flavor. Lovely fruit colors of smokey purple.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 2:30 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Park's Whopper Cr Improved')

Park's Whopper Cr Improved is just a better and newer version of the old classic Park's Whopper tomato. I feel that comparing the two, Park's Whopper Cr Improved has better taste.

Park's Whopper is the original version. There is a Park's Whopper Improved. I had grown Park's Whopper off and on for the past twenty years. Some years it did better than others.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 2:20 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Mortgage Lifter')

Mortgage Lifter is one of the heirloom tomatoes that is very easy to find as seedlings in the spring at our local nurseries. I find it to be a nice tasting tomato that is too prone to coming down with fungal diseases.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 2:16 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Grape')

Grape is a small cherry-type tomato with a grape-shaped fruit, so it is well named. I thought it had very good taste. I grew Grape last year, but don't know why I didn't get a plant to grow this year. Maybe next year.

German Queen is a potato-leafed variety of heirloom tomato. German Queen has lovely nice-sized pink tomatoes with great flavor. I grow this variety often in my garden as it is easy to find as seedlings each spring at our local big box stores.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 1:27 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Roma')

Roma is probably the best-known and most widely grown paste-type tomato. It has its faults, such as being prone to blossom end rot. Determinate plants set fruits heavily in a short time frame, which is what you want for processing. Great for cooking, but not good for eating fresh becaise they need cooking to bring out the flavor.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 1:08 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Viva Italia')

I grew Viva Italia for the first time last season and am growing some again this year. A paste type oval tomato similar to Roma but with much better fresh flavor and texture. I made stewed tomatoes, roasted tomatoes and actually just ate some fresh. Exceptional cooking tomato. Viva Italia is much less prone to getting blossom end rot than Roma.

Grew Sweet 100 last season. Many small cherry tomatoes that keep on coming. Even hot weather doesn't slow down production. The plant grows quite large, but I just trimmed back any branches going off where I don't want them. Doesn't slow down production any.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 1:00 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Husky Red')

Go to any of the Big Box Stores in the spring when tomato plants are out and Husky Red will be the most common tomato variety they have for sale. More plants of Husky Red on the shelves than any other variety. I can never figure out why. I have tried to grow Husky Red numerous times in different years. The fruit is small and the plants give out early in the tomato season for me. Nothing especially tasty about the small fruits either.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 13, 2013 12:55 PM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Brandywine, Pink')

I know Brandywine is an heirloom tomato, but I grew Brandywine and can't see what the fuss is all about. It is the most unproductive tomato I have ever grown. Fruit just did not want to set. Flowers and no fruit set. The two or three tomatoes I did get and was able to taste were good, but certainly not worth all the fuss

Brandy Boy is a Burpee Seeds hybrid that they claim has incredible taste with a very high yield. I grew them and got below-average yield, but maybe it was just a bad year for them. I never tried again, but I might grow some again next spring.

My Fourth of July tomato plants never managed to have ripe red tomatoes exactly by July fourth, but they still are very early. What I don't care for is the fact that these are such small tomatoes.
