It comes back every year bigger and better. It's drought tolerant, but will not bloom unless it rains. Mine has grown to be almost 7 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Flowers are about 8 inches wide.

Stunning, huge, dark red blooms on this beauty. Blooms for months here in my zone 4a garden, only stopped by frost. Unfortunately, a choice foodsource of the dreaded Japanese Beetle.

Modern cultivars began with Robert Darby who named his two most famous successes after Lord and Lady Baltimore. During the 1950's Darby created 'Lord Baltimore' --a solid red hybrid--by crossing several quite common, but at that time largely unknown, wild hibiscus species found in wetlands from Louisiana to New Jersey. Most wildflower enthusiasts have never seen one in the wild.
