I've grown and bloomed this here in the UK and it is not as difficult as its reputation suggests if you follow the basics - keep it moist, give it plenty of humidity, shade and heat. One trick to encourage blooms is to dribble water daily into the leaf axils allowing it to collect in there during the summer.
One thing to bear in mind if you do grow it indoor or under glass - they do get very large! Mine was five feet across when I got rid of it.

This comes back here, usually starts showing up about mid-May to beginning of June. I think the Zone 11 hardiness is not really accurate.

    Origin: South East Asia.

The Black bat flower, Tacca chantrieri, is a species of flowering plant in the yam family Dioscoreaceae.

The flowers are somewhat bat-shaped, are up to 12 inches across, and have long 'whiskers' that can grow up to 28 inches.

They don't like to be root bound.

Some nurseries list this as hardy to zone 10.

Fresh seeds are easy to germinate but the seeds do not stay viable long at all. Very special tropical plant has unique flowers!
