Large tree with a swollen globose or conical base, up to about 25 feet tall and 3-6 feet wide at the base. Named for the relatively straight leaves, which are blue-green or pale green and have a finely serrated margin. This tree is hesitant to branch until it reaches a good size, and even then mature plants do not typically have more than a few branches. From tropical deciduous forests in Oaxaca. Enjoys full sun in mild coastal climates but prefers part shade in the low desert.

Relatively uncommon in cultivation compared to B. recurvata, which can be distinguished based on its recurved and reflexed leaves. May be confused with B. gracilis, which has shorter and narrower leaves, as well as more numerous, narrower branches. Hybrids may exist in nature and cultivation.
