Nice-looking caudiciform succulent which does well in containers. Looks a little like a miniature cycad. Leaves and flowers appear in waves a few times a year; plant may lose its leaves for a couple of weeks in between. Generally male or female and easy to grow from seed. Ready to transplant when it has grown its first set of true leaves (about 90 days). Repot when soil is dry and avoid watering immediately afterwards (risk of rot).

From the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in southeastern South Africa. Widespread and relatively common over its range.

Tolerates full sun but does better with some protection during the brighter months. Relatively thirsty for a succulent. Likes regular water year-round (and tolerates winter rain) in mild climates. Excellent indoor plant given hours of daily sun. Does not need lots of root run and does well underpotted. Peduncles persist only when they bear fruit. Lifespan approximately 15-20 years in cultivation with good care.

An excellent, drought-tolerant landscape plant which does okay here with zero water despite our annual 5-6 month long summer drought.
