Cool Flame was bred by Grant Mitsch from Oregon in 1969. It is rated a classic by the ADS. It is fertile both seed and pollen; it's been used twice in the former capacity and 22 times in the latter capacity. Crosses using Cool Flame resulted in 18 named varieties and 6 noted seedlings. These all occurred in the Untied States except two in New Zealand. Hybridizing took place from 1979 till 2011.
