Small rosette succulents with white flowers from South Africa and a few neighboring countries. Mostly stemless. Some but not all plants have translucent windows in the leaves near the tips, especially on the upper surface.

Most of these plants are highly ornamental miniatures. The attraction of this group in cultivation is its suitability for container culture and its tolerance of lower light levels than many aloes (for example) would prefer. A sunny windowsill is perfect, a greenhouse also can be ideal.

All Haworthias prefer fast draining soil, bright light (but not necessarily full sun, especially during the late spring and summer), and discipline with the watering can (allowing the soil to go nearly dry or dry between each round of deep watering).

The genus Haworthia historically included plants that were recently split into distinct genera: Haworthiopsis (~18 spp.) and Tulista (4 spp.). These 3 groups are distinct but related, corresponding to the 3 former subgenera of Haworthia (identifiable based on floral features). These plants are all apparently capable of hybridizing with each other, and hybrids are frequently seen in nature. Species that were moved to Haworthiopsis include the very common attenuata and reinwardtii, and a few other plants with tubercles on the leaves.
