"Achillea is a genus of about 85 flowering plants, in the family Asteraceae. The common name "yarrow" is normally applied to Achillea millefolium, but may also be used for other species within the genus. They occur in Europe and temperate areas of Asia. A few grow in North America. These plants typically have frilly, hairy, aromatic leaves.

These plants show large, flat clusters of small flowers at the top of the stem. These flowers can be white, yellow, orange, pink or red.

The genus was named for the Greek mythological character Achilles. According to the Iliad, Achilles' soldiers used yarrow to treat their wounds, hence some of its common names such as allheal and bloodwort.

Achillea species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera that feed on Achillea."

These flowers are excellent as cut flowers, either fresh or dry.

Because of its attractive and nearly evergreen foliage, Yarrow makes a good texture plant for the front of a perennial garden, and it is a staple in meadows.

It requires full sun and tolerates drought well. Given fertile soil, Yarrow will spread rapidly. Keep it in check by annually spading out the wanderers.

Finely chop leaves for a slightly bitter peppery addition to salads and cheese spreads/dips. Infuse flowers for a facial steam or relaxing bath. Press fresh leaves onto razor cuts or small wounds to help staunch blood. Chew fresh leaf to soothe toothache, and swish infusion for inflamed gums. Tea may be used to regulate menstrual flow and to cleanse digestive system. Caution: extended use of leaves may result in skin sensitivity to light. The leaves will also help speed decomposition.
