A woody tall growing vine that is very attractive and does entice hummingbirds to flowers. One needs to weigh the positives and negatives when considering this plant. Hard to eradicate.
  • Posted by SongofJoy (Clarksville, TN - Zone 6b) on Jan 19, 2012 10:17 AM concerning plant:
Trumpet Creeper, a perennial vine, has 3-inch long, striking, trumpet-shaped, red or orange flowers in mid to late summer followed by decorative pods in the fall. It takes sun and any soil. Trumpet creeper, a very strong grower, is a great choice for adorning a fence, trellis, or mailbox in an informal setting.
  • Posted by ILPARW (southeast Pennsylvania - Zone 6b) on Feb 5, 2018 7:44 PM concerning plant:
The Common Trumpetcreeper grows in various upland and bottomland sites from southern New England & New York down to southern Florida into eastern Texas up to eastern Nebraska through northern Illinois and southern Michigan into the southeast tip of Ontario. It is one of those woody vines (lianas) that climb by aerial rootlets onto wood, stone, brick, etc. and can also be a groundcover. It is very fast growing up to 10 feet/year and is very rampant growing. Its fibrous, deep root system also produces long underground runners. It is a beautiful plant with great flowers good for hummingbirds. However, since it is so aggressive and powerful, it is best grown on a stout trellis or fence away from everything else; best with some lawn around it. It is sold by some conventional, mail order, and native nurseries and is occasionally found in average yards in eastern North America.

Be sure you do not plant it too close to a foundation. It is very hard to kill. I planted it and a year or so later moved the plant. It is still growing in the original location more than 5 years later.
  • Posted by gardengus (Indiana Zone 5b) on Sep 1, 2012 11:10 AM concerning plant:
I have grown this vine and the hummingbirds do love it, along with many flying insects. HOWEVER I would recommend not putting it within 12 feet of any flower or vegetable bed. It sends up starts everywhere and never stops.
I tried shovel root pruning. This reduced the number, but did not stop it from producing starts.

Can be destroyed (eaten) by goats. They eat all the leaves until the plant starves to death.
