Probably the most popular lily species in the world, and it's not hard to conclude why. This trumpet lily from China is very scented, almost indestructible in any garden and multiplies like crazy. Just be sure to plant this big purple bulb in a sunny spot with good drainage and it'll come back stronger year after year, turning your garden into a fragrant magic place. If you need to introduce someone to the world of lilies, Lilium regale is the best choice. This lily can also be easily grown from seed in large quantities.

So far, this is my favorite of the trumpet lilies. It is heavily fragrant at all times of day with a sweet, intoxicating, glorious perfume. The white blooms with purplish backs look great in any garden setting, adding instant elegance and class to even the humblest of gardens. My stems were 4-5 feet tall in their first season and produced 2-12 buds per stem. The foliage is feathery and attractive in its own right. Many people asked about the unusual "moon plants" before they even started to flower.

For me, lilium Regale is memories of my whole life and family-at Christmas [in Australia]. It was always there, as far back as I can remember, aged about 5 yrs. At our house, at relatives houses or our holiday shack, even in hotels many years ago, there was a 'grand entryway' with a big hall stand full of regale lilies. My Aunty Bev used to line the perimeter of her backyard [which was quite big] with regale lilies in big blue empty ink tubs, which her son brought home from the textile factory where he worked. I was most unpopular at a young age, when I fed her budgies some lily buds and now I can understand why. Recently I inherited my mother-in-laws plants, regale lilies included [and also a white cockatoo-but that's another story]. I grow and sell liliums as an addicted possessive hobby [if there is such a thing] but if I have potted Regale lilies to sell, at the markets, fetes or church sales, I don't get them out of the back of the truck. I wait until some elderly person comes along and says,''do you have the old beautiful smelling Christmas lily?'', well yes, as a matter of fact I do!!!-glad you asked!!
