This species named after the famous Dr. Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, MA, is native to Japan. I finally saw one planted at the grounds of the Reading Museum in June of 2023; never before. My old woody plant teacher of Dr. Michael Dirr really liked it a lot. He especially loved its beautiful polished reddish to chestnut brown bark that is marked with extended horizontal lenticels. It bears shiny, dark green leaves 3 to 5 inches long, often sort of rounded, bearing bronze to reddish fall color. The flowers are single pink and to 1.5 inches wide in late April into early May.
