Striped Squill (Puschkinia scilloides) is indeed hardy to zone 3, I have had it growing here for nearly 30 years. It's extremely hardy, despite giving an appearance of 'delicate' beauty. And it naturalizes, with a gradual (never invasive) spread ... even in a grassy area, it will seed itself among and between the roots of surrounding plants and, in springtime, make a lovely blue carpet. Highly recommend.

One of the most charming and beautiful early spring flowers are the ones of Puschkinia scilloides var. libanotica. Each fragrant, short flower has six petals that are white with a blue stripe down the middle, which can be seen in the front, the back, and the sides of the flowers. The overall look is a pale blue color. The plant multiplies by reseeding and bulb offsets, so it is a good naturalizer in the garden. Cold hardy to zones 3 or 4, it is a tough little bulb that will die down and come back up the following spring. An heirloom bulb that's been around since 1805, the plant was named after Russian botanist Pushkin.

"Taken from wikipedia's page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...

Puschkinia is a genus of two species of bulbous perennials in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae.[1] It is native to Asia and the Middle East.

This genus is named in honor of the Russian botanist Apollo Mussin-Pushkin. It was once included in the Liliaceae.

Leaves are green and strap-like, growing in twos.

Flowers are borne in early spring in racemes to 6 inches high.

Seeds are borne in three-parted capsules. After seed ripens in early summer, plants go dormant till the next spring.

Like members of the genus Chionodoxa, the bases of the stamens are flattened and closely clustered in the middle of the flower. In the related genus Scilla, the stamens are not flattened or clustered together."
