    I love Tulips, but didn't like the critters eating the bulbs after I planted them. So, I did some searching on the internet and found that by adding some crushed oyster shells, I could grow Tulips. The oyster shells are gritty and that deters the critters.

    Since I was layering different bulbs into the holes, I added the crushed oyster shells throughout, since some of the bulbs weren't listed as deer resistant. I didn't lose a single bulb! All my Tulips came up, as well as all the other bulbs in the past two years! Of course, I had to plant new Tulips the second year.

    In addition to deterring critters, the crushed oyster shells have some other added benefits to the garden. They add calcium and some minerals, help prevent water-logged soil in containers, and help neutralize soil acidity for tomato and vegetable gardens.

    Tulips are my favorite flowers. They come in all flower forms, singles and doubles, and in a wide array of vivid colors. You can have them from very early blooming until extra late blooming.
