Mimosa strigillosa is a low-growing evergreen perennial native here in Florida, found in moist to dry open habitats and disturbed sites. It has small pompom-like flower heads that are held high over the feathery foliage. Each flower cluster consists of many small tubular pink flowers with stamens and yellow anthers extending beyond the tube, creating the impression that the pink flowers are tipped in yellow. This ground-hugging plant spreads quickly and can extend for several feet in all directions, overlapping and creating a dense mat. Like the leaves on many other Mimosas, these tiny leaves are very sensitive to disturbance and will fold up or close when touched.

Powderpuff is moderately salt tolerant and extremely drought tolerant once established. Many insects enjoy the flower nectar, the leaves are a larval food for the caterpillar of the Sulphur Butterfly and the blooms are eaten by the native Gopher Tortoise.
