This is a true annual that blooms in April-May, sets seed, and then dies in late June into July. It is a member of the Hydrophyllaceae that is the Waterleaf Family. It is native from Oklahoma to Georgia up into Illinois and Michigan over to Rhode Island. It has lobed leaves that look sort of like a red oak leaf with conspicuous hairs, and the end of the leaf clasps the stem. The 5 petal flowers are fringed in appearance, like another forb called the Waterleaf, and are bicolor with a white center and light lavender outside. It bears capsules that contain 2 to 4 seeds. It gets its name from growing along the Miami River in Ohio; the river named after the Miami Tribe of that area and Indiana. One source gave it a common name of Scorpion-weed and another of Lacy Phacelia. its seed is offered by some mail order nurseries as Hudson Valley Seed Company, Native American Seed Company, American Meadows, and Hazzard's Seed Company in Deford, MI.
