There is supposed to be about 400 species of Ixora native to tropical Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands that are evergreen shrubs and small trees with showy clusters of red, orange, yellow, pink, or white flowers. In southern Florida, the most common species is supposed to be this I coccinea from southeast Asia. There may be the second most used species of the I. chinensis, but some sources consider both to be the same species. I can't say there really is a difference. However, this one or two species is used a lot in landscaping down there. Many times the plant is used as a sheared hedge, which does not bear as many flowers as unsheared plants. I saw reddish-orange or pink rounded clusters of small tubular flowers the most. The fruit is black and cherry-like. Ixora like moist well-drained soil and seem fine with the soil of Broward County Florida that usually is slightly alkaline made of sand, marl, and weathered limestone.
