In my opinion this is a much underused plant. It is excellent for xeriscaping & will take long periods of extreme drought. Under those conditions it will lose leaf color to the point of becoming yellowish but when it gets water it bounces back in no time at all with leaves that are a rich blue green. It puts out so many bloom stalks that you can't believe it & the bees ADORE them! The bloom stalks are never still as the bees keep them bobbing & waving all the time as the blooms seem to float above the plants themselves. Very bright & eyecatching. As the plant grows it makes new plantlets which have roots above the ground. Just break them off & plant them if you want more plants in another location.

South African native with narrow, succulent green leaves similar to an Aloe.
It can be propagated easily by stem cuttings planted and kept in a shady area. They don't need any special attention and they build strong roots in a couple of months.
Hardy to 20 degrees F, but can freeze down and resprout, so some list the hardiness down to 10°F. It has a bloom period from summer along the coast, but has something of a summer dormant period in hot interior gardens, where it will then rebloom in the fall.
