Why do they call those ugly things Roses? The blooms don't look like roses. They don't smell like roses. The only thing they have that looks like roses are the leaves and thorns. I just get so sick of seeing these things every where I go. Why can't someone cross them with a real Rose and make a bloom that looks like a Rose? Maybe even cross them with a scented Rose that smells like a Rose while they are at it.

I think the trick is to stop thinking of them as roses. Think of them as landscape shrubs and you could gain a fine appreciation for them. How many landscape shrubs bloom almost year-round? They're certainly prettier than privet.

On a related note, I wish that guy hadn't misspelled the name of the Knock Out roses in the title of his article that came out today. People who search for "Knockout" in our database probably won't find any. It's two words, not one.

I think they are just over-used. People think they are the only "Roses" that will grow. They are not. I know my 'Easy Does It' blooms more, looks more like a Rose, and has some scent as well.

In some yards, that's the only kind of "rose" that will grow. I personally don't like them, but I like the fact that they're so readily available. Why? Because if a person new to roses can grow a Knockout, then they're more willing to try other roses.. which will then create a demand for other non-knockout roses. The demand will then cause the other roses to be come more populous & cheaper, which is better for the rest of us non-Knockout people. I see them as the betta or the goldfish of the rose world. If someone can keep a knockout alive, then try different roses. But what I don't get is why on earth are they so EXPENSIVE??? 2gal Knockout - $18. 2gal non-Knockout - $10. WTH?

Clint, I am really glad you posted this. I have trouble growing roses here and had toyed with the idea of trying them. But from what you describe, I wouldn't like them at all! I want roses that look AND smell like roses!

Part of my problem is that I don't have good places to plant them. DH picked me up an Angel Face; kind of pushing the zone with that, but it was only $8 and I've paid that much for a potted annual. Hilarious! Lost a couple of roses that had survived for a couple of years, but I think they got too soggy over the past winter. You'd think with 20 acres there'd be a place I could put roses, but between the goats and dogs, so far it's not happening.

I agree about the expense- Ouch!! I also agree that I don't really think of them as "real roses"- but to me they are a really great hedge shrub that blooms all year even in hot dry conditions.

I have a neighbor that has probably 500 feet of a peach/pink Knock Out hedge along her driveway and it is in beautiful for about 8 months out of the year. Driving by- from a distance, mind you Big Grin

Not my choice for landscape shrubbery.

As landscape shrubbery they beat Azaleas! Though much favored around here, Azaleas only look great for about two weeks out of the year. The rest of the time they are dull green bushes with not enough leaves.

Good point, Porkpal! All of those much prized Azaleas are a lot of effort (especially trying to get them well established in a drought year!) for not a lot of reward the rest of the year.

I'm biased against lots of bulbs for the same reason, though...

By the way Zuzu, that article has been edited to now show the correct two words; Knock Out. Should we edit Clint and Toni as well? Rolling my eyes.

Are we not allowed to spell things wrong? I never visited a forum that edits the members' spelling. I think the Moderators are moderating too much.
